Cavity filling

A filling is a way to restore a tooth damaged by decay back to its normal function and shape. First the decayed tooth material is removed, the affected area is cleaned, and the cleaned out cavity is filled with a filling material. This filling closes off the spaces through which bacteria can enter hence prevents further decay. The type of fillings used may vary from person to person depending upon various factors like the position of the cavity, extent of repair etc and of course cost considerations. The types of fillings normally used are:

  • Amalgam (silver) fillings are resistant to wear and inexpensive. However, due to their dark color, compared with porcelain or composite restorations they are easily visible and are not usually used in front teeth.
  • Composite (plastic) resins are matched to be the same color as your teeth and therefore used where a natural appearance is required. The ingredients are mixed together and directly placed into the cavity, where they harden.
  • Porcelain fillings are produced in a lab and then bonded to the tooth. They are made to match the color of the tooth and resist staining. A porcelain restoration normally preserves most of the tooth.

In case if a large portion of the teeth is damaged then it is better to go for a cap or crown. Decay that has reached the nerve can be cured by either by root canal therapy or by pulp capping depending upon the situation. The type of treatment can be determined through proper diagnosis only.
